Budget Bride Tip #1 - Cakes

So we all know that wedding cakes are EXTREMELY expensive but a necessary item for any wedding day. Here is a Budget Bride Tip that can help you take the bite out of the wedding cake cost.

Tip#1 - DYI:Make your own wedding cake. I know I hear you screaming at the computer right now. But sometimes to save money we have to scraifice some of our time to make things work. Here are a couple of books that will help you to create your very own wedding cake.

Click on the image for more info or purchase these cookbooks.

Tip #2 - Communication is Key! You have to communicate and be honest with your cakemaker or bakery with how much you budgeted for your wedding cake. Make sure that you have presented your expectations on your budget and cake design in the inital consultation before you place a deposit.
Tip #3 - Use your Supermarket's Bakery. Many of our area supermarkets have bakeries set up in side of them. Go to your local supermarket bakery and have an impromptu consultation about sheet cakes. Sheet cakes are a very inexpensive way to supply wedding cake for all of your guests. For your head table you can purchase a small wedding cake that is beautifully decorated from bakery. You can then ask the supermarket bakery to fill your sheet cakes with the same filling as your head table cake.
Tip#4 - Lose the Fondant. Cakes made with fondant are typically more expensive than cakes made from buttercream. Now you have to be careful with picking the exterior of your cake. Buttercream does not hold up in extremely warm environment and fondant is usually not refrigderated because it will not hold up well. Be sure to discuss all of your options with your bakery of choice.

Treasure Hunting

Today, I have found not one but two treasures in the world of online sample sales and resells. Many of us would like to have the $3,000 or $4,000 IT wedding dress of the season. But let's be for real in this economy none of us can afford that amount for a wedding dress that we will probably where once in our lives.

Couture wedding gowns, inexpensive bridal dresses and so much more can be found at Scarlett's Closet Sample Sale. Scarlett's Closet is a haven for wedding dresses from the best in the business like Amsale, Jim Hjelm and Vera Wang. This website provides an array of dresses that anyone would be happy with. Now as a fair warning many of the dresses come in BRIDAL size 10 and can be easily altered for a perfect fit. Check out the website and let me know what you think.

For those of you penny pinching brides here is a website that will definitely tickle your fancy. For those of you who have already spent the money for the perfect dress but now it is taking up too much space and you are not going to pay for storage costs. Check out the Sell Your Wedding Dress website. This site is like ebay for the wedding dress world. You can advertise your dress on their marketplace and sell it just like ebay. For the budget bride who just cannot stomach to spend thousands in the economy that we are living in now. They have all types of dresses from a variety of designers like Priscilla of Boston, Amsale and Pronovias. The prices are all selected by the sellers but typically range from $500 to $7000. Check out the website and let me know what you think.

Re-Invent: Ring Bearer Pillow

As i was surfing the internet today I stumbled across this cute little site selling Ring Bearer pillows. Now these pillows are not your traditional white satin pillows. They have a punch of color which gives a lift to this sometime stale wedding accessory. Starting at $50 this is definitely a splurge but it's one that will have your guests talking for years to come.

Check out the website: bklyn pillow

DIY - The Welcome Bag

The welcome bag is an esstenial for destinations weddings or when inviting out of town guests to your wedding. These bags give you the oppoortunity to supply your guest with an itinerary of events occuring throughout the duration of the wedding celebration, provides phone numbers of designated people in case of emergency or questions and gives them a list of local attractions to visit when they have some down time. You can also add a favor into your welcome bag. For example, if your having your wedding at a vineyard you can include wine bottle stoppers in your welcome bags.

Custom welcome bags can become expensive when most vendors are asking you to at least purchase 250+ bags from them plus you have to pay a plate charge for them to make your message custom for your bags. Here are a few tips to help you purchase at a minimal cost or DIY. To purchase at a minimal cost look for companies who sell welcome bags with a set of pre-determined templates. Usually a company will offer you about 5 to 6 templates to choose from and you can just give them the specifics in terms of your name & wedding date. This works out to be cheaper for you because the vendor is not creating a whole new template they are just adding your information to it. The Budget Brides Handbook Shop is currently offering a 10% discount on all purchases off welcome bags when you use promo code 3512TEN from now till October 31st.

You can also create your own welcome bags. Here are the following items that you will need.

Paper Shopping Bag
Sticker with you and your fiance's name on it including the wedding date
(you can also opt to use a design)
Ribbon (Color theme of wedding)
Favor
Itinerary
Emergency numbers
Info on Local Attractions & Maps

Paper Bags: A good place to purchase your paper bags is http://www.nashvillewraps.com/
Stickers: From Rhinestone Monogram Stickers to Personalized Labels & Tags http://www.weddingfavorites.com/ is a good place to start looking

See Below for suggestions on paper, maps and favors.

For the itinerary and emergency phone number cards you can go to your local stationary store or online store and purchase sheets of cardstock paper so that you can create these items at home. Kate's Paperie & Papyrus here in NYC are both havens for brides who are looking for paper for their special day.
You can also purchase travel maps for your out of town guests so they can navigate their way around the city you choose to celebrate your special day. Emapstore.com and maps.com are 2 websites where I have found maps starting at $4.95 & up. Another way of cutting costs is to ask the hotel that you have chosen for your guest to stay in if they will provide maps free of charge for your guests. Sometimes the front desk of many hotels will have maps to help there guest when they have travel questions.

Lastly, the welcome bag favor should be something small and relate to the theme of your wedding. Having a winter wedding place a snowflake bookmark or coffee cup candles in the bag to represent the time of the year. You can find tons of favors for your Welcome Bag at The Budget Brides Handbook Shop.

Welcome To The Budget Brides Handbook

About The BBH
The Budget Brides Handbook is a company whose focus is to provide wedding inspiration, ideas, products & services to budget savvy Brides that will help them to accomplish a fabulous wedding within their budget.

About Sharise
There has always been a special part inside of Sharise that gave her a gift in planning events. At age 15 Sharise planned her first big event... Her Sweet Sixteen. She coordinated everything from the renting of the party place, party decor, DJ, delegating assignments to her family on who would cook what dish and even picking out & paying for her own party dress. At that age she would have never thought of party planning as a full time gig. This gift ultimately kept growing and growing with coordinating & producing a fashion show in college, helping to throw her grandmother's 80th birthday party, baby showers, law school graduation, bridal showers and weddings. She not only realized she had a gift but also saw that her gift was going to waste. In the fall of 2005, she conceived Sharise Finley Events (formerly Events By Sharise) and in October 2008, The Budget Brides Handbook was birth out of a tough economy and the need to fill the void of Brides who wanted to find innovative products and services in their budget. By adding her own style of creativity, organization and the need to stay ahead of the trend, she is always finding new ways to learn more and deliver more to The BBH readers.
