I absolutely love her wedding dress and but I am definitely not sure about the color. I understand that she was going for a non traditional wedding but the verdict is still out.

One thing I can say is depending on what type of non traditional dress you get you can save a boat load of cash on your wedding day attire. You can find an amazing dress in your local department store (I LOVE the formal dresses at Nordstrom.com) or even rent a dress from a business like Rent the Runway.

Mr. Budget and I were discussing our wedding the other day and I was just like how about a surprise wedding. Let's tell everyone we're having an engagement party and when they get to the restaurant they will find out it is actually a wedding. After I gave him a semi walk through of how it would go he was onboard. I think this is a great idea for us. It would allow us to have the cocktail reception that I always wanted and he can have the traditional ceremony that he always wanted without the church. It will also allow us to have an intimate gathering where the people who will attend will be generally there in support of our upcoming marriage. We are only looking to invited about 100 people expecting about 75 to actually come.

The downside is that we may not receive alot of gifts because we're giving people the idea that it is an engagement party. But I am okay with that. Now don't get me wrong I would love gifts but it is definitely not a deal breaker.

So what do you Budget Brides think about a surprise wedding? Good Idea or Bad Idea?

So below are the Valentino shoes that I have been lusting after for the past few months since I saw them in the Winter 2010 Issue of Martha Stewart Weddings (pg. 41). So you budget brides know that they are way out of my budget.

I know I have been MIA for a while but November is an exciting and tough month for me. If you guys can think back this time last November is when my grandmother died. About 12 years ago my other grandmother died in you guessed it right in the month of November. Then just last week a really good friend of mine died at the young age of 28 years old. So as you can see my month has been crazy while also planning a birthday party for myself. Actually the last few months have been crazy and I have really not been about to really focus on The BBH's business.
So now to the title of this post. Budget Brides we have been NAME JACKED. Yes because I did not realize that the subscription had expired and the credit card that I had on file was no longer valid, we have been NAME JACKED by a UK company. These blood suckers want me to pay them $5,000 to get the domain name back. So I had to put myself on pause...... For one I don't have $5k to pay nobody for a domain name and for two it's my damn name. So now I have the daunting task of thinking of a new name and all new everything. I have been going over a few options in my head.

As many of you may or may not know I am moonlighting as a Wedding Dress Consultant at a bridal shop in NYC. I really love this position as it gives me an opportunity to have some real initmate time with brides. Well this Saturday I had the pleasure of helping a bride named Ramona who for unforseen circumstances has to get married in a hurry. Usually when brides come in at the last minute (Ramona's wedding is on Tuesday, November 2nd) they have a very limited budget (under $300). So Ramona, her fiance and myself went through the racks to find the perfect dress under $400. Together we picked about 6 or 7 dresses within her price range and headed to the dressing room. As Ramona hopped in and out of the dresses I could tell that none of them were really THE DRESS. So I went and pull another dress that was right up her alley and she LOVED it. Now it was time to finish the look. Since her budget was really small I showed Ramona our blushers to use in the place of a veil and a nice pearl earring and necklace set for her jewelry. Then out of nowhere she said I need my something blue. I was a little taken a back since the couple was from Romania and committed to doing a justice of peace ceremony with just the two of them.

Over the last couple of months a friend of mine has been discussing with me some of the details of her friends' weddings. She was a little taken back because she had shared her own wedding details with this friend and come to find out those details was definitely in the friends wedding so it got me to think. Two brides can definitely have the same idea but what makes the ideas special is originality.

Below are two images of a Macaron Tower with sparkles sprouting out of it. The Macarons are definitely ordinary but the flair of the tower and sparklers is so original.

Here are some ideas to make your Ordinary Ideas Original.

1. Decide on a theme and emerse your entire wedding in it. For example, if you and your fiance love Chinese food. Emerse yourself in the Chinese wedding culture and incorporate those details in your wedding. Maybe have a 10 course meal, wear a red kimono reception dress or create a invitation in chinese with a decoder feature.

2. Having a black tie wedding make it a masquerade theme and provide the masks. Your guests will love it.

3. Take a favorite dish you love and incorporate it into your wedding. Mr. Budget and I love his grandmother's receipe of Jewish Salad so we'll probably have it has our salad course when we get married.

What was your wedding day budget?

Our budget came to roughly $20,000, which may sound high to many brides out there, but is actually pretty frugal for the particular Southern California region where our wedding was held. Stephen and I were careful to "spend within our means" and prioritize those areas that meant the most to us.

Ceremony $675 (included church site, musical director, coordinator, officiating priest and marriage license fees.)

Reception $6,300 (no site fee, plus a reasonable food and drink minimum. The cost included a Mexican buffet dinner, plus three hours of hosted beer, wine and signature sangria.)

Cake $430 (Our three-tier wine-themed cake featured grapevine designs. We splurged a little on luster dust to give the cake a touch of sparkle, but were careful to avoid any labor-intensive decorations that would dramatically raise the price.)

Transportation $90 (To save money we rented a black van, which Stephen's sister drove. She also split the cost with us.)

Photography $3,400 (Damien Smith, my good friend and fabulous wedding photographer, shot complimentary "getting ready" photos for me, while Alex Neumann , whose artistry is simply incredible, wowed us throughout the rest of the day.)

Videography $1000 (By choosing an up-and-coming videographer, we were able to score eight hours at a great price.)

DJ $1,175 (We saved 10% by holding the wedding on a Friday.)

Stationary $300 (We saved a bundle by going DIY with our invites, escort cards and programs.)

Decorations/Favors $450 (Including items as our guestbook, white chocolate favors, card cage and other small decorative items, such as wine bottles and plastic grapes.)

Flowers $1,550 (By keeping our ceremony floral decor simple, consisting mainly of two altar arrangements which we later reused for the reception, we kept costs at a comfortable level. Our florist Lei-Ann also went above and beyond for us in all areas, especially by enhancing our cake with a dusting of flower petals and designing the most gorgeous bridal bouquet.)

Bride's Attire $2,400 (Including gown, alterations, tiara, veil, shoes, lingerie, garter and jewelry. My shoes from Payless' bridal collection were a steal at just $25!)

Bride's Hair & Makeup $520 (This was a definite splurge that was completely worth it. I felt beautiful and confident throughout the day, and the professional styling was picture perfect.)

Groom's Attire $0 (Since we had six groomsmen and two fathers renting their tuxes from Men's Wearhouse, Stephen's entire rental was FREE!)

Rings $900

Wedding Party Gifts $250

Month/Day of Coordinator $1,500

Wedding Hotel $95

First Dance Lessons $200

What was your wedding day theme and colors?

Our "California Romance" theme allowed us to tie in wine-related elements like grapes, wine bottles and corks, as well as postcards from our favorite California cities. Our colors were grape, white and silver, with touches of lavender here and there for added softness and contrast. We're big believers in "less is more," and our wedding was a simple yet elegant affair.

How many guests attended your wedding?

We held an intimate celebration for just 75 close friends relatives and friends. Keeping our guest count to no more than 80 was important to us, not only due to budget considerations, but also because we envisioned our day as a chance truly spend time with our loved ones without feeling rushed.

Which service or item was your budget buster?

Great photography was definitely our biggest splurge, but I wouldn't necessarily consider it a "budget buster" at all, since it was worth every penny! He blew us away with his skills, and most importantly, he made the entire day fun and relaxing, which shows in every one of our pictures.

Which item/service did you save the most money on?

Scoring eight hours of video coverage for $1,000 was a steal in our area. My great friend and fabulous wedding photographer, shot complimentary "getting ready" photos for me, while Alex Neumann wowed us throughout the rest of the day. While our video is not fancy high-definition or cinematic masterpiece, the hour-long finished product captures all the highlights of our day, including full ceremony, and is of a much higher quality than what we would have gotten had we relied on family or friends.

What DIY money saving projects did you use to maintain your budget?

Stationary and decor were two areas where we saved big by taking things into our own hands. Our DIY invites, made from a Brides kit sold at Michaels, were simple but classy. We also created our own map inserts, wine-cork escort-card holders, wine-bottle table name stands, a crossword puzzle challenge, pew bows, programs, custom tissue packets and more. Our motto was that DIY elements didn't have to be elaborate and definitely didn't have to stress us out!

What aspect of your wedding will you never forget?

After pouring so much love and effort into planning our day, seeing it all come together filled me with more happiness than ever before. I was fully present and in-the-moment, taking it all in sharing the once-in-a-lifetime experience with Stephen and our loved ones. Usually a "behind-the-scenes" girl, I truly enjoyed my day in the spotlight as I married my best friend.

6 Tips for Being Prepared for Your Bridal Appointment

I have not revealed this until now but I am moonlighting as a bridal consultant as I continue to grow The Budget Brides Handbook as well as my event planning company, Sharise Finley Events. As a wedding dress consultant, I encounter brides everyday who come to their bridal appointment unprepared or just a complete mess.
Below are six tips that will help you to be a PREPARED BRIDE for your bridal appointment.

Pick up a few bridal magazines. If you see some dresses in there that you like rip them out and hold them until you go to your bridal appointment. This will help the consultant to see a visual of your style. (Sometimes brides come in with a style in mind but they cannot verbalize what they want which can waste valuable time.)

Do your homework!!! I was watching Girl Meets Gown yesterday and a bride came into the bridal store looking for a specific dress. However, that particular bridal store did not carry that particular line. So she spent her bridal appointment time trying on dresses that she really couldn't decide on because she just had to try on the dress that the store didn't have. Lesson: Call ahead and ask the bridal salon if they have the particular dress you are looking for if not keep moving until you find the store that carries that dress.

It is always nice to bring your whole family to the bridal appointment but it is definitely not necessary. I typically suggest that brides bring the people's whose opinion mean the most and the one who holds the purse.

If you are going wedding dress shopping on a day that you have made multiple appointments, let the consultant know up front. This will allow the consultant enough time to pace themselves and you while trying on wedding dresses.

Have some type of idea of what type of wedding that you are going to have. This will help the consultant to be able to pick the right dresses for you. For example, if you are having a morning wedding at the Botanical Gardens, you definitely should not wear a ballgown.

Never come to a bridal appointment without any money. At least have half the money that you are expecting to spend on your wedding dress. I cannot tell you how many brides I meet that fall in love with their wedding dress but do not ANY money to put down on their INVESTMENT.

And Happy 2nd Anniversary to us!!! I have been writing this blog for the past two years and I still love it. My hope for the next year is to attract more readers, attract more Budget Bride stories, write with more consistency and create an online weekly for all of you. Thank you for being loyal readers and cheers to many more years.
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Having a plan when it comes to planning your wedding is essential to staying within your budget. However, mapping that plan out allows for you, your finace and anyone else paying for the wedding to understand your expectations. When planning for your special day you must take sometime to determine what is really important to you. Is it food, flowers, decor, pictures? It will definitely be different for everyone but understanding where you want your money to go is essential to have a budget savvy wedding day.

Here are some instructions on how to set-up your budget allocation chart.

In an excel file, create 3 separate columns with the following names EXPENDITURES, PERCENTAGES and DOLLAR AMOUNT.

Under the EXPENDITURES column list all of the categories that you have included in your wedding. ie. Wedding Attire, Photography/Videography, etc.

Under the PERCENTAGES column, begin to assign the percentage of your budget that you envision spending on that particular category.

Under the DOLLAR AMOUNT column begin to input the dollar amount of that percentage for your overall budget.

New Trend: Pre-Sale Wedding Dresses

I know that many of you have heard wedding designers and newlyweds selling their dresses through sample sales or pre-owned wedding dress sites. Well now I have seen it all. There is a new kind of sale hitting the bridal industry called Pre-Sale Wedding Dresses. Yes, Budget Brides you have read it right there are a group of brides out their selling their wedding dress before their wedding has even occured.

Are you stunned because I sure as hell was. I mean let's take a pause.....

Okay, are you back?

I don't know if I like the idea of pre-selling a wedding dress. Many brides sell their pre-sell weddings dresses for less than 50% off the retail price. I think that this is a little deceiving. Most times when a bride sells a used dress after the wedding date, the dress is sold for 50% or more off the retail cost of the dress.

So for instance, Mary buys a wedding dress from Designer X for $6,000. She is reviewing 2 options for selling her wedding dress the first is posting it on a wedding dress site on pre-sale 6 months before the wedding for $4,500 and the other is posting the same dress on the wedding dress website after the wedding for about $3,000. With a difference of $1,500 purchasing the dress after the wedding is taking place is the better option.

My thoughts are if you are going to purchase a used gown then you should purchase it after the wedding has already occured. It doesn't make since to pay more money for a dress that will have been worn by the time you received it. So in theory if you buy a pre-sale dress your actually paying upfront for a dress that has never been worn; however, by the time you get the dress it's has been worn and your out a considerable amount of money that could have been reallocated to something else.

I am qualifying this as a budget don't. This type of selling practice is risky business. You will not know the condition of the dress once the wedding is over with. If you are looking to buy a pre-owned wedding dress, I would buy a dress from a seller whose wedding has already occured.

Treat Your Bridal Party..... Whoopie Pies

Happy Monday Budget Brides!!!

I have seen Whoopie Pies in all of the candy bars lately. I have never tasted them but they look oh so delicious. So I thought that I would share a recipe with you that I found on My Baking Addicition. As many of you may know that getting together your bridesmaids for meetings or wedding duties can be hard and expensive if your feeding them in payment for their time. I think desserts are many times a low cost way of giving your party a treat without breaking your wallet.

My Baking Addicition used the recipe below for Valentine's Day but they can be used for any occasion. So whip up a batch for your bridal party and send us some pics. You may see yourself on the web. LMBO

Red Velvet Whoopie Pie Recipe

1 Tablespoon of Unsalted Butter
1 Cup Cake Flour
1/3 Cup of Unsweeten Cocoa (not Dutch process)
1/2 Tablespoon of Salt
2/3 Cup of Canola Oil
3/4 Cups of Granulated Sugar
1 Large Egg
2 Tablespoons of Red Food Coloring
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
1/2 Cup of Buttermilk
1/2 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
3/4 Teasppon of White Vinegar

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place spray foil liners with non-stick cooking spray and place on a cookie sheet.

2. Whisk cake flour, cocoa and salt in a bowl.

3. Place oil and sugar in a bowl of an electric mixer and beat at medium speed until well blended. With machine on low, very slowly add red food coloring. (Proceed with care it may splash) Add vanilla. Add flour mixture aternately with buttermilk in two batches. Scrape down bowl and beat just long enough to combine.

4. Place baking soda in a small dish, stir in vinegar and add to batter with machine running. Beat for 10 seconds.

5. Place 1 tablespoon of batter per foil heart pan.

6. Place in oven and bake until a cake tester comes out clean, 10-14 minutes. Let cake cool in pans for 10 minutes. Then remove from pans and cool completely before frosting.

7. Slice the cakes in half and frost the inside with cream cheese frosting then sandwich the cakes together. (You can decorate the edges of the cream cheese with sprinkles)

Directions to Make Cream Cheese Frosting

1 (8) Ounce of Cream Cheese, Softened

3 Tablespoons of Butter, Softened

1 lb of Confectioner's Sugar

1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Abstract

Using a mixer blend of the ingredients together until smooth and creamy and spread between layers.

Picture It (in my Sophia from Golden Girls voice): It's January of 1999, I am at BBQs with a bunch of my friends. In high school I usually hung with about 7 or 8 girls; however, this particular evening there were other girls from our high school that came along to celebrate a birthday. To make a long story short, we had a great stress-free time ordering our food, great conversation and a room full of laughs then the bomb drops. The check comes to the table and people start putting down $20 for their dinner (for 2 people), others start breaking out calculators to add up their bills (including me because I will not pay for others) and a bunch of head rolling occurs because others are trying to skip out on their bill. I can say that this day goes on the list of days that I wanted to crawl under the table and just die. The lesson learned from this experience always know whose paying and how the bill will get paid.

This rule can be translated to your wedding as well. Before you and your fiance decide to put down a penny of money have a serious conversation about who is actually footing the bill for the wedding. As a wedding planner, it is so embrassing to see newly married couples opening up their wedding day cards in order to pay vendors. Know who is paying, how they are paying and when they are paying. This will help you to 1) create & maintain your budget, 2)acknowledge what checklist items can be crossed off your lists of to-dos, 3)give you a point person to follow up with and 4) Give you a peace of mind on your wedding day knowing that all bills have been settled in full.

If there are a variety of people paying for the wedding, for example, your parents, his parents or others make sure you confirm with them about their finacial participation in your special day. Also be honest and up front with them about your expectations for your wedding day. Have a conversation with them about how you would like items paid for. For example, you would like to have the final payment in an envelope the morning of the wedding so that you can hand it off to your wedding planner/coordinator. If your contributors that not adhere to your reasonable rules then you may have to give them a GIRL BYE and move on without their finances.

I hope you all had a great weekend. We all know that weddings can be a very expensive time for the bride and groom as well as their respectively families but many times we don't think twice about the Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids, Maid or Matron of Honor have very important roles in the wedding planning process as well as some wedding activities and wedding day. It is their job to throw your bachelorette party and possibly your bridal shower. I have also seen bridesmaids act as wedding planners, graphic artist, florist, bakers and a host of other things that take a considerable amount of time and money.

So when considering attire for your bridesmaids here are a few tips on how to keep your bridesmaids out of the poor house.

Have an initial meeting with your bridesmaid whether individually or together to discuss how much they can actually commit to spend for their entire outfit for the wedding. This should include the dress, shoes, purse and possibly any jewelry.
Once you have determined a price point give your bridesmaid a guideline to follow in terms of picking out their bridesmaid dresses. (Tip: No one wants to feel like they are spending their money without a say.) Examples of guidelines include tea length satin dress in plum or a strapless floor length dress with pick ups.
If possible, allow your bridesmaids to use items they already have in their closet like silver sandals or pearl earrings and necklace.
You may want to skip expensive bridal shops and head straight to department stores like David's Bridal, Macy*s and The Limited for economical options. I suggest department stores because you can use coupons on purchases or get a discount for the quanitity you purchase.
If your bridesmaids have deep pockets, I would suggest companies like Two Birds Bridesmaids and Butter by Nadia who offer convertible dresses that your bridesmaids can wear again and again after your wedding.

www.anntaylor.com - Prices range from $185 - $395 most of these dresses can be worn again to church, weddings, Christmas party or a night out on the town.

www.thelimited.com - Currently they are only offering two styles priced at $89.50 and $98.

www.whitehouseblackmarket.com - Prices range from $168 - $398.

Real Engagements.... Carolina & Hector

Happy Monday Budget Brides!!

Carolina and Hector first met in 2001 while in college through their membership in a sorority and fraternity. They were distant friends, although they both had an unspoken crush on each other. While in graduate school, Carolina and Hector asked about each other through mutual friends of theirs. After finishing her Master's degree in upstate New York, she moved back to New York City to be closer to her friends and family. Shortly after moving back home in the winter of 2006, Carolina and Hector reconnected and maintained a friendly friendship while slowly admitting to each other their true affection for one another.

Two and a half years later, after the 2010 New Year's Eve fireworks, Hector gave Carolina a photo album. In the album, Hector chronologically organized their love notes, restaurant receipts, pictures, cards, tickets and movie stubs they shared from the beginning of their relationship. Unbeknowst to Carolina, he saved all of the relationship's momentos leading up to that moment. After reaching the last page in the album, he transitioned into playing a smooth romantic song from the 1990's R&B artist, Jesse Powell. As he sang the words to Carolina (or at least tried to), he kneeled on one knee and proposed to his longtime secret crush . The started their relationship on May 13,2007 and will be starting their lives together on May 13, 2011.

I found this amazing DIY tutorial to make Rose Applique for shoes on Wedding Bee courtsey of Mrs. Cola. These shoes would be a great addition to spice up a wedding gown or bridesmaid dresses. I found this super cool photo place card on a blog called Libby James. Libby actually featured The BBH on her blog Tuesday to our surprise. Anyways, this polariod place card is an amazing and affordable way to create place cards that represent you and your fiance. Below the picture you can find the items you will need to recreate this look.

Many couples opt to have a photobooth or photo table. You can turn your place cards into favors by setting up a photo table at your wedding where guests can take pictures of themselves and place them in a photobook for you and then have a picture of themselves to remember the night. Talking about killing to birds with one stone. See below for a listing of what you will need to accomplish your photo table.

2 Polariod Cameras (You may need more depending on the number of guests. I would say 1 for very 75 guests)

Welcome Back Budget Brides!!! I know that many of you are just getting back from your Fourth of July vacations but let's get down to all things WEDDINGS. Yesterday I posted '10 Things Every Bride Needs To Know...' which discussed what brides may need to know when they embark on wedding dress shopping.

Since that was our topic yesterday I was pondering on the subject of tipping. I really wonder what people think about tipping their Wedding Dress Consultant for the time he/she has spent with them during their allocated appointment time. I know many of you maybe thinking, why should I tip if they are already getting paid? Well let me put you on pause and give you a few reasons why it is to provide your consultant with a tip.

1. Wedding Dress Consultants are providing you a service the same as a waiter or taxi driver. Would you go to a restuarant and order a ton of food and not tip the waiter for the service he/she provided?

2. Many of you make a million appointments at every bridal shop in town? (Only God Knows Why!) Wedding Dress Consultants typically work on commission which means their time is very valuable. If you are taking up precious time when you know your heart is set on another dress in another store you are preventing the WDC from making a possible sale.

3. Wedding Dress Consultants have the tasks of carrying the 15 dresses that you want to try on, helping you in and out of the dresses and possibly picking the dresses up off the floor after some of you with no home training have thrown them down like last night leftovers.

10 Things Every Budget Bride Needs to Know...

However, I thought that this would be a great time to provide all of you guys with a list of suggestions you may need to know when going Bridal Dress Shopping.10 Things Every Budget Bride Should Know When Going Bridal Dress Shopping1. Before you step into any bridal shop do your homework. Google the stores you are thinking about visiting read other's comments on their experience. Also note their rules, there are many bridal shops that you cannot take pictures in the dresses. This will prepare you for what you may encounter during your appointment.2. When scheduling the appointment make sure that you ask about the time allotted to you for your appointment. Many brides don't realizae that your usually allotted between an hour to two hours for bridal appointments. Which is not a lot of time. So have a fifty person party full of indecisive people is not the way to go. In most cases, you will leave the bridal shop frustrated and confused. Bring the people who A) are paying for the dress and B) people whose opinion you highly respect. 3. Come to your bridal appointment with pictures (from magazines, the internet, etc.) so that the consultant has a clear understanding of what you are looking for. There is nothing like have an idea in your head that you cannot describe to someone else. Pictures always help to bridge that gap.4. I know that many of you may shy away from this tip but allow the consultant to go in the room with you and help you in and out of the dress. This is the time that the consultant takes to learn more about you, your wedding and the dynamics that is keeping it all together. This will help her/him to help you find the dress of your dress. When you have a friend or family member help you it waste valuable time that the consultant can be using to pinpoint the right dress for you.5. In most cases, know that the consultant is experience in helping brides find there perfect dress. Take note of the suggestions she makes about dresses that fit your silhouette or compliment the type of event that your going to have. For example, you maybe a bride who wants a mermaid dress but you do not have any hips. The consultant will probably suggest an A-line or ball gown dress that may work better for you.6. KNOW that you need SIX to NINE MONTHS in order to find, select, order your dress and make alterations. Many brides wait till two or three months before the wedding to purchase their dress not realizing that they are not allocating enough time to receive the dress from the manufacture plus the time it takes for alterations. (If you wait too long there many also be a rush shipping fee that you may have to pay which may take you over your budget.)7. Some bridal shops charge a fee for you to make an appointment so make sure you find that out upfront. This will allow you to visit the bridal shops who do not have a fee first. You never know you may find your dress there and will not need to lose money or feel obligated to go to those pay upfront appointments.8. If possible before purchasing a dress always ask for alterations to come and give you an estimated price on what alterations will cost you. This will help to give you an over all view of how much you will actually be spending for the cost of your wedding attire.9. Some bridal shops also offer discounts on the days that you purchase your wedding dress. BUY the accessories the same day. It does not make sense to lose free money in discounts thinking I can find it somewhere cheaper. Listen Boo, you cannot get a bling - out veil and tiara for $50. It will make your whole wedding day ensemble look cheap and tacky. Like Nike says, Just Do It.10. Be very conscience of your timing!!! Timing is a huge issue in wedding dress shopping. Don't be caught out there spending at the minimum $65 (rushing shipping $40 and alterations $25) because you procasinated or could not make up your mind). This is $65 before you purchase the dress or made an alterations appointment.11. YOU ARE NOT FAT!!! Ok I Know I Know.... every woman is self conscious about something but this is definitely not the time to be. If you have to go two sizes up to a dress that actually fits then do it. You will potentially spend more money in exchanging the dress or hospital bills because you passed the hell out since you could not breath in that too small dress. It is better to always go bigger and have alterations than to go to small.So Budget Brides, what do you think about my suggestions? Born in a small town in rural England, Alison and her family moved to Austrailia when she was nine years old. Have you ever been to a morning wedding and been so hungry? Well two Thursdays ago, I went to a civil wedding ceremony at City Hall for a very good friend/sister. Before we went to the clerk's office all I could think of was a good NYC street vendor coffee and a donut. It made me think about a post I saw from Style Me Pretty via Marry You Me about donut favor bags. I would have loved a warm donut and coffee that early in the morning. (It was actually before 9:00 am and I have turned into a person who is not a lover of mornings.)

So if you have an early morning wedding and want to provide a great snack for your guests this is a perfect option.

DIY Martini Bar from Sunday Suppers

What is hump day without some talk about Martinis? Okay so I don't drink but when I did I was an Apple Martini girl. I found this great Martini Bar idea on Sunday Suppers. I thought this would be a great addition to an intimate wedding reception or a small engagment party.

The set-up that the wonder people over at Sunday Suppers put together was clean and very modern. I would have opted for some flowers, fruit and a little color but everyone can add their own special touch.

Sunday Suppers is a great company that marries cooking classes and dinner parties to top off a great Sunday evening. Classes are taught twice a month in a loft in Williamsbridge, Brooklyn by a chef with 14 to 20 strangers.

I know that I have been gone for a while. I am still trying to juggle working crazy shifts and bringing you fabulous posts. I also went on my very own 4-day weekend staycation. I will definitely post on it later on this week. Well enough about me and on to the next.

Everytime I go to Target I love to browse the stationary section. It is a great way to see what's new and it gives me inspiration for new ideas. Since last year I have seen the Green Flat Invitation below and I thought it was so cute. One of my clients even used it as her wedding invitations. Click here to see post.

While roaming the blogsphere I saw the invite below from a great Green House Wedding. What I love about these invites is that the couple purchase the Target invites and made them their own by adding other creative details.

These invitations are so cute, right? I think the couple may have used a stamp to add more detail to the invitation as well as other stationary items such as ribbon and a trim cutter to create the "we are one" feature.

Below you can find the invitation that the Berti's used. Even though they didn't add any addition detail one thing they did have was raised lettering. I thought that this was a great option. It gave the invite and added touch as well as a great feel. I still have mine. I know I know I am a boarder line hoarder. Definitely need to make my way over to to my favorite design blogs (GIGS and Blu Label Bungalow) for organizing tips.

Here are some great tips about store bought invites:

Make sure you buy pre-designed invites that are on great paper.
Try to determine the paper weight before buying. This will help you when you go to a printer for raised-lettering or more creative detail.
Remember to used the creative resources at your finger tips. Don't forget ribbons, stamps and paper cutters which can take your design to a whole new level. (Sidebar: Always get the Sunday paper Michael's craft store always has a 40% off coupon.)
When visiting your favorite retailer, ALWAYS stop by the stationary and clearance sections. You never know you may find invites and stationary on sale. Now that would be the perfect GOAL!!! (Sorry so into the World Cup right now. LOLOL)
Always buy a little more than you need, open as you need it and then return the extra after the fact. This will help you just in case your local store sells out or you make some mistakes.
Lastly, this should probably have been first create a plan and stick with it. You will definitely spend more money if you change your mind.

So last week I received this amazing little package in the mail from Avon. The package included three lip gloss from the Glazewear Lip Gloss line. The three colors that I was sent was ice pink, mirage and intense plum. I love them all. Glazewear is not like your typical lip gloss as that it is not thick and heavy on the lips. This is a major plus in my book. I hate walking around feeling like I dipped my lips in butter. Whew!!!

So I never ever heard of a rainbow inside of a cake. But when I saw this picture I thought this cake looked both intriguing and yummy. Ok so I really am not a sweets type of gal but this cake looks so delicious especially with the fruit on top. My mouth is watering as I am typing this post.

I cannot wait for a perfect occasion to try making this cake. I just don't know who I can make this for just yet. But I am definitely plotting on someones special day. This cake also gave me a great idea to incorporating it into your wedding planning festivities. Happy Monday Budget Brides!!

I hope all of you ladies had a great weekend. I have been looking over this blog lately to see where I can improve and make this blog better for myself and my readers. By the way I LOVE my readers!

I also noticed that this blog really doesn't say much about me. So I have decided to compile 10 items to let you all into the crazy world of me.

1. I am an emotional eater and shopper. Let my emotions get out of whack, I will gain about 5 pounds and my bank account will be empty.

2. My fear is failure. I am definitely scare to go out on a limb because failing will devastate me.

3. My favorite shopping places are Loehmanns, Home Goods, Target, Marshalls/TJ Maxx (post layoff). Pre-layoff: All the stores listed above including Lord & Taylor and Banana Republic.

4. Mr. Budget is my best friend. He loves me unconditionally even when I smack him in the jaw while he's tickling me.

5. I will be a Nittany Lion till the day I die. Go Penn State!!

6. I have declared 2010 the year that's all about me. Not in a conceded way, but I am going to do what makes me happy because when it is all said and done I have to be happy.

7. I am lusting for a pair of Louboutins. Red soles are just so sexy.

8. While being unemployed I gained about 30 pounds. Depression is no joke.

9. God is my beginning, middle and end. He is my everything.

10. I LOVE BUDGETS, BLOGS & WEDDINGS.

Invitation Shopping Tips:

1. Set a budget for your wedding intvitation ensemble prior to browsing, remembering to include the cost of postage. As different invitation manufacturers have different card stock qualities, (which will greatly vary by price,) it is a good idea to know where to start when looking.

2. If you have chosen your wedding colors, try incorporating them into your wedding ensemble. This creates consistency from the beginning to end of your event and will also give your guests a bit of a preview of what is to come.

3. Let your personal style, or 'couple style', shine through your invitations, as your wedding is truly a reflection of your love for one another. If you're a fun, adventurous type of couple, choose bold, vibrant colors or patterns that reflect this. You may want to choose a more comtemporary design with ribbons or a pocket. More conservative couples may want to choose a more subtle design with embossing, tattered edging, white or ivory hues.

4. When searching for invitations, don't be afraid to ask your invitation vendor for what you are looking for. Some invitation vendors may have alternate options that are not shown online or inside an album. This can include alternate color choices, layer cards, designs, ink colors, fonts, motifs or monograms. If you have a vision in your head of your perfect invitation, go ahead and ask. Most invitation vendors are more than willing to work with their brides in creating a dream wedding ensemble.

Sunday is a great time to do a little shopping. Whether it is flea markets, the mall or yard sales. The weather is getting better and better as the calendar flies by. Do you love shoes as much as I do? Here is a post you will need to mark your calendars for.

I had to hold on to this amazing find for 7 whole days. A couple of weeks ago I went to the New York Magazine bridal show. I was able to score a New York Magazine Weddings Issue Summer 2010 which is an amazing resource especially if you live in New York. Take a look at the Real Wedding below featuring Sharon & Darren.

The Couple
Sharon Boone & Darren Wright

Wedding Date: October 16, 2009

Location: The W Hotel, Hoboken (Ceremony) & Amanda's Restaurant, Hoboken

The Goal
A tiny cocktail party with a Rat Pack-y feel.

The Dress
Sharon bought her dress from Dolly Couture, a site that specializes in fifties-inspired styles. I customized the design online - short with a drop waist - and gave my measurements. They sent a sample of the fabric. It was $520. Darren got a very nice charcoal suit at a department store in England for the equivalent of $300.

The Venue
The most important aspect was a view of New York. At the last minute, our guest list doubled from 12 to 24, because my extended family decided to come. We had the WOW suite at the W. The usual rate is $2,500 per night; I asked for a discount and got it for $1,000. The hotel provided glasses, napkins and extra chairs; I brought in loads of tea lights.

The Food & Liquor
I supplied the wine and Champagne; I'd been collecting bottles all year. My parents bought crackers in bulk at Costco, and I went to the Garden of Eden for fruit and cheese. After drinks, everyone went to Amanda's for dinner. We got a cozy private room and had a great menu for $40 per person, and they let us bring our own cake. Ours cost $75 dollars; the bakery (Giorgio's in Hoboken) delivered it to the restaurant.

The Flowers
Flowers were not a big deal to us. I had a bouquet, Darren had a boutonniere, and we got corsages for our moms. We kept it local and got everything at Beethoven's Veranda in Hoboken for $350.

The Photographer
Our photographer was Kat Bryant. She was just starting out doing weddings, so she gave us a great rate of $500. But we didn't have her stick around for the reception.

Where Else They Saved
Forgoing the officiant was our biggest saver; they charge at least $400. They all said, "But we get to know you!" I thought, I am paying you to become my friend? So we had a friend get ordained online. We hosted on a Friday night. And we had no paper - programs, etc. - or D.J.; I just filled up my IPod.

I received a comment from an awesome reader about one of my last weeks post. So like every great blogger, as soon as I see a new name I go to their blog to see what there all about. As I was browsing through Fabulously Dirty Martini's, I saw Jillian's post about a contest she had won through LCY Graphics. As soon as I saw this image I fell in love. I just had to have it. At $18.75 including shipping and handling, I didn't feel guilty buying it. Now off to the clearance sections to find the perfect frame. Hmm I just may have to cross the GWB (George Washington Bridge)for an Ikea run.

I stumbled upon a great website that gives free invitation downloads. There are many there to choose from and the website is updated very frequently.

DIY invitations can be a smart way to go. If you can find a free download or template that you have fallen in love with. I would suggest that you try the DIY route. You can go to a website like Envelopments, Paper and More, Vistaprint, etc to find paper, envelopes and even printing services. In finding your own paper and envelopes this gives you the opportunity to print at home or go to a printer for something like raised printing.

So check out Download & Print to find a wedding invitation just for you. Anna Skye has really created a jewel that I know many Budget Brides will love.

Today is such a beautiful day in NYC. I have a couple of things to do and Mr. Budget worked overnight last night so we won't be able to enjoy much of the day together. So last Friday the girl and I had a GNO (Girls Night Out) where we were totally engrossed in one of the ladies upcoming nuptials. Of course she had plenty of magazines and samples. So while I sat around and ate Papa John's (oh how I love it) I flipped through the current Oriental Trading catalog. And what do I find? Edible Cake Decorations!

I thought this was an amazing idea since November Bride's sister is making her wedding cake. Since that weekend will be absolutely crazy, this will be one more thing that November Sister does not have to create because it is already done.

The ides is also great for Budget Brides. If you watch Amazing Cakes or Cake Boss, they make fabulous cakes at fabulous prices. So maybe you budget is not over the top edible cake decorations could be a great option for you. The going rate for a custom made wedding cake starts at about $800 and skyrockets. I must admit that I am a lover of the necklace bib. I really didn't like the trend at first but once I started going on interviews for companies like Teen Vogue and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. It became a accessory must have to add a little wow to my standard BID (Black Interview Dress). Now Prismera Designs has taken the necklace bib to a whole new level by creating PD Couture. PD Couture is a collection of fabric necklaces made from a variety of influences like vintage, art deco and ruffles. These would be great with a simple white dress for that special day.

New York Bridal Market Alert: Black is the New White

I wanted to take a break from the recaps of New York Bridal Week to share some awesome news that was release from WWD (Women's Wear Daily). Two wedding industry giants are collaborating to make luxury bridal attire more affordable. I am so drooling to see the details of the designs. I know all of you budget bride fashionistas are doing the same. The article below is really long; however, I know that many of you are not subscribed to WWD. So I think it would be a disservice to you not include the whole article and give you my personal summary. However, I will point out some highlights that many of you are just itching to know.

"Vera, do you take brides on a budget to swath in chic folds?"

"I do!"

It may be the ultimate in aspirational design and marketing. Vera Wang, high priestess of high-profile, ultratony wedding glamour, has signed a long-term agreement with David's Bridal, mainstream mecca for the proletarian bride. The pact promises to bring the designer's renowned bridal aestheic - and the magical aura that comes with the best kind of celebrity endorsement, the genuine kind - to a mass audience. The name of the collection remains under wraps until its trademark is secured.

Wang, who has dressed countless movie-, music- and social-star brides - Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman, Kate Hudson, Ivanka Trump, to name a few - maintains that, while the high end of bridal is lovely, there's much to be said for an ecumenical scope. "It's ginormous," the designer offered of signing with David's. She and company president Mario Grauso sat for an interview at their headquarters on Thursday afternoon. " There's a big market out there that we could never take advantage of [before]."

While clearly focused on the bottom line, Wang acknowledged the emotional significance of this deal for consumers. She paraphrased a line from her tome, "Vera Wang on Weddings" (Harper Collins, 2001). "I said, 'Most of you can never wear a Vera Wang dress.' My book is me talking through all my years of experience of going to weddings, helping girls with [their own] weddings, being in weddings, all of it. Now I can do the dress for these girls - something we could never do on our own."

For his part, David's Bridal president and chief executive officer Robert huth noted that signing Wang amounts to a major coup. He spoke by phone from company headquarters in Conshohocken, Pa. "Vera is the name in bridal,' he said. David's had long been interested "in adding a recognizable brand [to] provide a halo effect to the company, one that would not only drive incremental traffic, but would offerour customers a value they're looking to get from an aspirational brand. When you start looking around at who would fulfill that, there's no question."

Spread across all 50 states, David's 308 mostly mall-based stores currently feature the collections of Oleg Cassini and Galina as well as its own extensive private label. Gowns range from$299 to $1400. Wang's offerings will run in sizes zero to 30. (David's is owned by Leonard Green & Partners, also the owner of Priscilla of Boston, which is sold in its own brand stores across the country.)

The Wang-David's union was not entered into in haste. "They'd spoken to us over the years, as they have with our competitors,' Wang said. Things turned serious after Grauso returned in September to the company at which he had worked years ago. "I focused on closing the deal," he said. "Vera came to me when I started and said, 'This is something that we've been considering. What are your thoughts?" As it turns out, he had plenty, some rooted in his concern over bridal's overall " diminishing distribution channel in the U.S.."

Wang then interrupted that thought to chime in: "We lost 16 doors between Neiman's and Saks in one week. I believe it was a Monday, Saks closed eight doors and on Friday, Neiman's."

The issue, though now acute, has festered for years, according to Grauso. "Vera & I learned together when this company was young that distribution is one of the most difficult things with bridal,' he said. " There's not that many stores to sell to, and it's been slowly, slowly eroding. [In the current market] we're seeing only a nominal number of stores. So I said to Vera, not only am I interested in offering your dresses at a lower price point, but how nice to have distribution."

By Huth's accounting, David's owns of the U.S. Bridal Market. In addition to bridal attire including bridesmaids and accessories, it offers prom and special occasions fare, as well as gifts and stationary. The firm's Web site boasts more than 40 million unique visitors annually. Although Huth declined to articulate how large the Wang business might become, he is clearly thinking big. "Vera wants to sell a lot of dresses, and that's what we want to accomplish," he said. "As she designs we're going to be on the other side, trying to balance her enthusiasm and her design with the realities of our customer."

One such reality is the mass bridal customer can barely help but be obessed with the notion of a Vera Wang dress."A show like the Kardashians, [Khloe] was talking about having a Vera dress and who wouldn't want to have a Vera dress," Huth said. " I mean, how many stars do you have, or [famous] people, who want Vera Wang to design [their] wedding dress? You look at our customer who's mainstream America, and how many of these women would say, 'Geez, I'd do anything to have a Vera Wang gown?' That's the whole premise [with] Vera: She is the queen. For us, it's going to further validate the value of what we give our customer.

"'I'd like a Vera Wang dress, but I can't afford it' - we hear that frequently," Huth continued. "We do an awful lot of consumer work and when we were looking at different brand options, hands down, she was the one that they wanted."

For her part, Wang insists that those women will get more than her name on a label, a statement supported amply by precedent: her far-flung collection for Kohl's, the design of which traces back clearly to the artful approach she takes to her own ready-to-wear. "I said then, 'I'm not going to Kolh's unless I can make good product that I'm proud of, or if it's not true [to my aesthetic]," she said. "At David's I think I will be able to bring a taste level. I've been doing this for 20 years in September, and whom can I reach? With all the development, with all the draping, trying to push the volcabulary of bridal ahead every single year, what is the point if I can't share all this work [via] a brand that is reliable amd credible to people, if I can't bring it to another audience?"

Asked whether she's concerned about the inevitable downgrade in fabrics, Wang took issue with the premise of the question. She maintains that at least when it comes to classic fabrics - crepe de chines, for example - she and other top-tier designers source from the same mills as many designers further down the food chain. "Even for my lower price point of ready-to-wear, I do the basic CDC program," she said. "We do wash it, and we do things ti it.. The truth us, we're all using [certain] fabrics. And by the way, a lot of the [designers] who do those [mass] chains use the same fabrics, only they get them directly from the mills in China. You can't compete unless you have a big company behind you because, let's be honest, they're not going to pay the same for the fabric. The truth here [is that] most of us in America who are upper-end designers use Symphony. [For David's] I will be using Symphony and other things. I'm sure there are poly versions [of various fabrics] - which a lot of designers on the upper end [of bridal] use, too."

The collection's initial range will feature about 20 bridal gowns, which will hit the stores next spring. Beyond that, a number of fine (and some not so fine) points remain to be fleshed out. For example, Wang and Grauso indicated the launch would be across all doors, likely in March, starting with bridal gowns only with bridesmaids to follow. Wang also said she would love to do children's wedding attire. Huth said he expects to start with "150 doors, give or take," launching with bridal and bridesmaids, as early as late January: It's a matter of how quickly we can get both lines together." And he's not anticpating Vera Kids.

All agree that this could develop into something huge that could well change the vocabulary of mainstream bridal across the country. And while none of the three key players would bite when asked if the business is intended to go after J. Crew and the upcoming Urban Outfitters foray into bridal, it certainly sets the stage for "Bride wars" of the retail sort.

Then of course, there's the matter of high-low, and whether a customer for one of Wang's elaborately hand worked lace creations from the luxe end of her signature collection.\, which could cost upwards of $15,000, might not like that another bride can get her own Vera for three figures.

"Our modern girls are not going to be turned off because we do something else expensive," Grauso said. "That's not something people today are embarrassed by."

Beside, the design will be worthy of the label. Notes Wang, "If I couldn't raise the bar, I wouldn't do it."

Happy Monday Morning Budget Brides!!

As I hate to interrupt the Spring 2011 New York Bridal Market recap post. I just have to post this one to help two sisters in the wedding community. Whether we're budget minded or platinum brides/professionals your heart just has to go out to the lovely ladies of Cake Girls. You know Brenda and Mary Maher from the WE television show Amazing Cakes. Well on March 29, 2010 their sweet bakery shop was destroyed by a fire that started in the apartment above the shop. When I found out about this tradgey my heart just dropped. Even if you don't have a business just imagine your apartment/home going up in flames with all your money and treasured items inside. The ladies are truly devastated that this has happened but the show must go on and they have to find a way to manage filling the 500 orders that they have outstanding. I would love to send them a million dollars to help them get on their feet but lets be honest. I don't have that kind of money. But what I and the rest of the blogging world can do is get the word out.

The ladies of Cake Girls are selling their t-shirts in hopes that the proceeds raised will help their employees who are displaced right now while the ladies are trying to rebuild.
